The Scholfield Family Legacy
From a Kansas farm to the foundation of one of the state’s most respected automotive families.
Humble Beginnings, Big Dreams
Victor Herbert Scholfield was born in 1932 on a Depression-era farm near Fort Scott, Kansas – the youngest of seven children. Raised with grit and grounded by faith, hard work, and family ties, Vic learned early what it meant to roll up his sleeves and contribute. Whether helping out at his brothers’ potato chip company or selling trailers as a young man, he never stood still for long.
It didn’t take long for Vic’s natural talent to shine through. His brother helped him land a job selling cars at Hurst Ford in Augusta – and that’s where the magic began. Vic didn’t just sell cars – he built relationships. He listened. He followed through. And he brought energy to the lot that people couldn’t ignore.
Wichita Takes Notice
In 1965, Vic and his brother Dick brought their growing dealership from Augusta to Wichita’s east side. They started with Pontiac and Oldsmobile at 7633 E. Kellogg – just as the city was expanding in that direction. The timing was sharp, but the real edge came from Vic’s ability to connect with people and build trust.
That original store laid the foundation for what would become decades of momentum. As the business gained traction, new opportunities followed – Mercedes in 1968, Honda in 1971, and eventually other respected brands. But through all the growth and expansion, the Honda dealership remained a constant. It was more than a franchise – it became a flagship, known for consistent service, loyal customers, and a deep connection to the Wichita community.
Even as the Scholfield name became associated with a wide range of automotive brands, the heart of the story was always here – at the Honda store – where Vic’s people-first approach shaped the way business was done, day in and day out.
“Big Red” and the Power of Personality
Around Wichita, Vic Scholfield became known as “Big Red” – a larger-than-life figure with quick wit, a persuasive streak, and a heart as big as his laugh. He could charm anyone – nuns, CEOs, first-time car buyers. Vic had an energy that pulled people in – a rare mix of business savvy and down-to-earth humor.
He didn’t just build dealerships – he built a culture. One that valued people over profits. One where employees stuck around because they felt like family. One where doing things “the right way” mattered more than doing them fast.
A Legacy Carried Forward
Roger Scholfield didn’t just step into his father’s shoes — he built on everything Vic started and led Scholfield Honda into a new era. With a clear sense of vision and values, Roger grew the business with a focus on consistency, transparency, and taking care of people — both customers and employees. Under his leadership, Scholfield Honda became more than a trusted dealership — it became a place people wanted to come back to, generation after generation.
Now, a third generation is shaping the future. AJ Scholfield, Roger’s son, serves as managing partner and plays a central role in the leadership of the dealership. He brings his own voice, energy, and ideas to the table – all while staying grounded in the principles that have defined Scholfield from the beginning. He isn’t just continuing a legacy – he’s building on it with clarity and purpose.
What began with Vic Scholfield’s drive and vision has grown into something lasting – a family-led dealership rooted in Wichita, built on trust, and shaped by three generations. That story is still being written – and there’s plenty more ahead.
